Vessel Safety Check Program

A great day on the water starts with a boat that is properly equipped and ready to go. A Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is a courtesy review of your boat that confirms required safety equipment is onboard and in good working condition, in accordance with state and federal regulations. The focus is simple and practical: prevent problems before they happen by helping boaters understand safety requirements and operate with confidence and care on the water.

Vessel Safety Checks are free and completely voluntary. If your boat does not meet all requirements, no fines are issued and no law-enforcement agencies are contacted. Instead, the examiner explains what needs attention so you can make corrections and, if you choose, have your vessel rechecked. Boaters who pass the inspection receive a VSC decal, indicating the vessel has recently been reviewed for safety compliance.

Just as important, a Vessel Safety Check creates an opportunity for open, informative conversations between boaters and trained examiners. These discussions encourage safe habits, smart decision-making, and continued learning—helping protect everyone who shares the water.
